Self-Esteem
Self-esteem, also known as self-worth or self-respect, is the opinion people have of themselves. In psychology, self-esteem is used to describe the sense of self-worth or personal value individuals put on themselves. It includes emotions and beliefs that we possess, whether positive or negative, about ourselves. When this belief and associated emotions are positive and the individual can maintain a positive sense of self in face of difficulties, the person can be said to have healthy self-esteem. On the other hand, when individuals have negative beliefs and emotions about themselves, they are said to have low or unhealthy self-esteem.
Self-esteem is an important psychological construct, regarded as an enduring personality trait, that is imperative to various life outcomes including academic accomplishment, occupational success, success in intimate and social relationships, and overall satisfaction and happiness in life. Individuals having healthy or high self-esteem are said to have happier outcomes in all spheres of life compared to those having low self-esteem.
